'Residents and businesses improving
the local area for the benefit of all'

If you have ideas for improving the area please let us know, contact us [here]

We are grateful to Waitrose, Bloomsbury for the generous support they provided to enable us to set up this web site, which would not otherwise have been possible.

IMPROVEMENT: Projects & Campaigns

  • Promoting the on-going improvement of Marchmont Street and surrounding area.
  • Establishing and maintaining a safe, high-quality street environment within the area of benefit, ensuring it is an attractive place to live, work and visit.
  • Working in partnership with Camden Council, the Police, local residents' groups and other organisations.
  • Attracting inward investment from a variety of external sources.

Opportunities for Improvement [more]

After completing the Marchmont Parade landscaping and public art project and the Marchmont Community Garden, we turned our attention to opening Cartwright Gardens to public use, which we are pleased to say was achieved on 19th December 2016, in connection with the redevelopment of the adjacent student halls by the University of London. We are continuing to seek improvements to the 'sunken garden' site in Coram Street and the public realm opposite Russell Square station in Bernard Street. We also earmarked the disused public conveniences in Guilford Place (pictured), which is due to be turned into a restaurant. An opportunity arose, as a result of a permitted change of use at the Woburn Place car park below Russell Court, to landscape the former petrol station forecourt. However, the site remains a glorified car park and the Council seems powerless to bring about the desired landscaping.

Traffic and Pedestrian Safety [more]

We successfully lobbied Camden to implement a range of improvements to traffic and pedestrian safety in our area, including the dangerous Marchmont Street/Tavistock Place junction in 2011 and the pedestrian and environmental improvements along the entire length of Marchmont Street in 2011/12.

Public Realm [more]

We have worked with our partner organisations since 2004 to bring about extensive improvements to the 'public realm' throughout our area of benefit. Improving the look and feel of local streets benefits residents, businesses and visitors to the area, whilst helping to engender 'pride of place' in the local community.

Greener, Cleaner, Safer Streets [more]

GREENER STREETS: We have worked in partnership with Camden's Arboricultural Service to introduce more than 70 new trees throughout the area since 2005, in addition to replacements for damaged or dead trees. Where possible, we have consulted local residents and businesses on the choice of species to be planted adjacent to their properties.

Parking, waiting and loading [more]

We worked in partnership with Camden Highways to optimise on-street parking and loading facilities, particularly in Marchmont and Coram Streets, achieving a balance between the needs of residents, traders and the increasing numbers of visitors to the area. The introduction of additional loading bays helped to ease the congestion previously caused by double-parked delivery vehicles.
