A Marchmont Association blue plaque commemorating the great theatre impresario, Richard D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901), was jointly unveiled at the site of his former home on 7th August 2018 by the Deputy Mayor of Camden, Councillor Maryam Eslamdoust, David Martin, General Manager of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, and Jane Thorne, Executive Director of the D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust.

Richard D'Oyly Carte lived at 71 Russell Square from 1881 to 1886, which was accessed via an entrance in Guilford Street, now occupied by the President Hotel.

We are grateful to Imperial London Hotels Ltd for sponsoring this plaque and for hosting the informal post-unveiling reception.

Details of D'Oyly Carte's life are revealed in our historical publication, 'From Fields to Fountains - The Story of Bloomsbury's Russell Square' (p. 120).
